ROMINE JUST MISSES FINAL ROUND BERTH AT COLUMBUS

HEBRON, OHIO (June 13, 1999) -- Paul Romine, 51, of Indianapolis, missed going to the NHRA Pontiac Excitement Nationals final round by just sixty-five thousandths of a second.

"I got out on him, but we had a hole out at the start and the engine just didn't make it to the finish line," Romine said. "That's racing though and I'm proud of the guys, they really thrashed in this heat and Clayton (Harris, the crew chief) fought off the flu to give me a great ride."

The CARQUEST team's next NHRA Winston Drag Racing event will be the Mopar Mile-High Nationals, July 16-18 in Denver, Colorado. Next weekend, the CARQUEST team travels to Cordova, Ill. and the IHRA Amalie Oil Summer Nationals.

ROMINE HEADS TO THE SEMIFINALS WITH WIN AGAINST DIXON

HEBRON, OHIO (June 13, 1999) -- Paul Romine, 51, of Indianapolis, is heading to the semifinals after defeating Larry Dixon in the quarterfinals of the Pontiac Excitement Nationals.

"That was great race," comment Romine who won with a 4.804/299.20 to Dixon's 4.825/294.18. "It's fun coming out here and beating these kids. It must be the heat or something, whatever it is, we're looking forward to the semifinals."

Romine's next 'kid' will be Bob Vandergriff, Jr. Romine is 1-0 lifetime against Vandergriff, Jr. Romine beat Vandergriff at the 1997 NHRA Winston Invitational. Romine's last NHRA semifinal race was the 1998 NHRA FRAM Route 66 Nationals. Romine has been to one NHRA final round, the 1997 non-points Winston Invitational in Rockingham, NC. He is the two-time and defending IHRA Top Fuel Champion. Crew chief Clayton Harris, 60, of Addison, Ala., is a 1978 IHRA Top Fuel Champion and as a driver has won one NHRA National Event (1973 NHRA Summernationals).

ROMINE DEFEATS SCHUMACHER, WILL RACE LARRY DIXON IN ROUND TWO

HEBRON, OHIO (June 12, 1999) -- Paul Romine drove the CARQUEST dragster to a round one winning time of 4.878/295.14 to defeat Tony Schumacher, who ran 5.092/288.03.

"Man, that felt good," said Romine, a two-time IHRA Top Fuel Champion. "We really needed a round win. This is anybody's race and the key is to not beat yourself because if you get too aggressive, the track will get you."

In round two, Romine will race Larry Dixon. Lifetime Romine is 1-3 against the Miller Lite team with Dixon winning their last meeting in round one of this year's Mac Tools Gatornationals. Romine's last NHRA round win came at last year's NHRA Route 66 Nationals where he defeated Schumacher. Incidentally, Romine defeated Dixon in round one of that race.
