Columbus, Ohio (June 16) - Mark Whisnant, driver of the RW Performance Chevy S-10, came to the Pontiac Excitement Nationals in Columbus, Ohio looking to make up for his poor showing at this event last year.

Whisnant redeemed himself when in the first round of qualifying he ran a 7.665 / 176.79 mph to place him solidly in the fifth position on the Pro Stock Truck eliminations ladder.

"We knew we could make a good run," said Whisnant. "We have had so many stupid problems in the last couple races, that I was really becoming discouraged. I knew if we got everything right, that we would make the runs I knew we had in the truck.

"In Chicago we had electrical problems that we could not pin point. We changed everything and it looks like we have solved the problem.

"I am very pleased with this first pass. It may sound funny, but we could have been faster. We didn't have the truck geared exactly right, and we didn't expect the air to be as bad as it is. All we need to do now is make minor adjustments, and I'm sure we can be even quicker.

"This is a real turn around from where we were last year. Last year we were totally lost, and learned what does not work on this racetrack. Since then, we have learned a lot about hot weather racing. With our notes from last year, I believe we will only get better. That is if the weather holds.

"The forecast for tonight and tomorrow is for rain, which would be fine with me. That means we would race from the number 5 spot on Sunday. Which is right where we want to be."

Qualifying at the 36th Annual Pontiac Excitement Nationals continues on Saturday June 17. Eliminations will take place on Sunday June 18, at 11:00AM EST.
