FORMER NBA STAR NANCE TRYING TO BUILD CAREER IN NHRA PRO STOCK HEBRON, Ohio -- The way Larry Nance sees it, there's not much difference between his first two years as a power forward in the NBA and his first two years as a Pro Stock driver in NHRA Winston Drag Racing. "When I first came into the league, I was laid-back, came in and felt my way, and learned what I needed to improve on," Nance said. "I got my butt in the gym and worked all summer to improve. It's the same with racing. "I need to get out and test, to learn the car and learn what I'm doing driving because I'm still making mistakes driving." Nance, from Akron, Ohio, is making steady progress in the Summit Racing Oldsmobile Cutlass during his second year of NHRA Pro Stock competition. He has qualified for two races this season and has recorded a career-best time of 7.015 seconds and speed of 197.06 mph. He will continue his learning curve at the 33rd annual, $1,452,450 Pontiac Excitement Nationals presented by Summit Racing, June 12-15 at National Trail Raceway. The race is the 10th event of the 22-event, $30- million NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series in 1997. Nance fell in love with drag racing while playing for the Phoenix Suns. He decided to race when his 13-year career ended with the Cleveland Cavaliers after the 1994-95 season. Progress has come slowly for Nance since his NHRA debut in June 1996. He didn't qualify for any races last year in the ultra-competitive Pro Stock category, but he didn't become an NBA star overnight, either. "I understand how tough it is," Nance said. "The only thing it does is drive me harder and make me more determined to do well. I think we're right on schedule. We're getting it."
