DIXON WILL START FROM NO. 6 POSITION AT COLUMBUS
HEBRON, Ohio (May 20, 2006) Two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon used a consistent Don Bender tune-up to qualify his Miller Lite dragster in the No. 6 position Saturday at National Trail Raceway. The 38-time NHRA winner raced to three consistent 4.5-second passes with a qualifying-best 4.531-second effort.
After making just one qualifying attempt on Friday evening as the second Top Fuel qualifying session was canceled due to a brief rain shower, Dixon opened Saturday's qualifying at "Trails" with a 4.582 second, 324.12 mph effort. Dixon's 4.582-second pass in the Miller Lite rail was the third quickest time of the session.
Dixon then drove his Don "the Snake" Prudhomme-owned dragster to the quickest run of the final qualifying session when the Miller Lite/Lucas Oil rail clocked a performance of 4.536 at 326.95 to pace the field in the final session. This is the third time that Dixon has qualified sixth this season. His quickest attempt of the weekend came on Friday's opening pass when he blistered the National Trail Raceway quarter mile in 4.531 seconds.
"We're getting more of a handle on the tune-up," Bender said. "We tested after Atlanta and we learned a lot. We only made two test runs, but we learned what not to do. It's important to learn what not to do to get ahead. We made big strides."
Dixon, a three-time winner at National Trail Raceway (2001-03), will match-up against No. 11 qualifier Doug Kalitta in the first round of Top Fuel eliminations on Sunday morning at 11 a.m. (ET). Dixon is 21-20 versus Kalitta in his career.
