Jerry Haas back in the saddle
Hebron, Ohio - - Jerry Haas returned to the driver's seat at this weekend's NHRA Pontiac Excitement Nationals presented by Summit Racing for the first time since the inaugural SummitRacing.com Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in April of 2000. Only the results were different.
At Vegas, he qualified third. This weekend he missed the field by two spots, finishing in 18th.
"After a year and a half it's great to be back in the driver's seat. I wouldn't trade the time I spent as a team owner, but it was great to once again pull gears and be behind the wheel. The first run yesterday it bogged down. We didn't know what to throw at it. I went out there with the baseline from Chicago and it (the truck) didn't like it at all. So we didn't run very well that first run. We worked on the tune up and continued to improve each round. Unfortunately, we just missed the field.
"Although we would have been much happier had we qualified, we are please with the weekend and are looking forward to the next race in my hometown of St. Louis. We feel we'll be part of the field there.
"We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of a new Jenkins-built power plant and expect it at any time. This will enable us to test during the summer downtime for Pro Stock Trucks. With the new engine and testing time, we feel we should be able to compete with the very best competitors that Pro Stock Truck has on the track today. I, along with Jimmy Gunther and Bob Shawcross and the entire crew at Jerry Haas Race Cars, are expecting big things for the remaining races on this year's schedule."
Next up for Haas is the Sears Craftsman Nationals which will be contested next weekend (June 21-24) at Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Ill., just across the river from St. Louis.
