The Pontiac Excitement Nationals at National Trail Raceway is the 11th stop on the 23-event NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series schedule. This event has always been special for Jeg Coughlin Jr. for a number of reasons.
Jeg Coughlin Jr scored his first NHRA national event win in Super Gas at this race in 1990 on Father's Day. The 32-year old second generation driver has many fond memories that surround the upcoming event.
"My earliest memories are of my dad racing and helping out where ever we could with my brothers," explained Jeg. "I started racing at National Trail Raceway during a Wednesday night program the track had in one of my brothers street cars while they (John, Troy & Mike) were racing in Super Gas and Super Comp.
"I have done everything from ride on my bike from pit-to-pit asking for spark plugs to win national events at the track. When I start to get close to the track and drive thru the gate my mind starts replaying all of the great memories I have that surround the track. I instantly start to smile and get excited to get behind the wheel."
Jeg Coughlin is looking to make it back into the winners circle for the first time this season. The reigning NHRA POWERade Pro Stock champion is coming off of a string of strong showings where he posted back-to-back semifinal round appearances and a runner up finish. Jeg is currently in the No. 4 position in the NHRA POWERade championship with 612 points. He trails the No. 3 spot by 74 points.
"We have put ourselves in the position to win and have just fallen a little short," said Jeg. "Our entire group has been working extremely hard to get the yellow and black JEG'S Mail Order colors back into the winner's circle and can't think of a better place to do it than National Trail Raceway."
