</pre> KIRKERSVILLE, Ohio. (June 18) — It was Father's Day at the NHRA Pontiac Excitement Nationals, and six racers also took the time to thank Goodyear for their race wins at National Trail Raceway near Columbus.
Tony Schumacher earned his second Top Fuel dragster win of the season when he outran Joe Amato, who had troubles with his parachute in the final run. "I bought my dad (team owner Don Schumacher) what I thought was a nice present, but he said, 'I don't want anything but the trophy,'" Schumacher said. "I thought, 'Yeah, he and 15 other guys.'
"I had no problems with my Goodyear tires. We ran a used pair on that last run and it was our best run of the weekend," Schumacher added. "The car left great; I wasn't even spinning my tires. It was right down Broadway, straight as an arrow. We have 6,000 horsepower and you're battling constantly, you're gonna have some problems, but we didn't have any problems with our Goodyear tires this weekend."
Mark Pawuk garnered his first Pro Stock win in five years on the Goodyear Pro Stock tires he helped develop. "It's an honor to work with Goodyear and give me the honor to help develop the tire," Pawuk said. "We've built this good relationship and I'm sticking with Goodyear, they've been with us for years. I'm excited about some of the new development tires coming up. They're facing some competition this year and Goodyear's really stepped up. I think you can tell Goodyear's fired up about drag racing and they're ready to rock 'n' roll."
Pawuk's victory was also Goodyear's 157th consecutive Pro Stock win, a string that started back in August 1992 at Seattle.
"This was an impressive day for the Goodyear Eagles in NHRA competition," said Perry Bell, Goodyear drag racing operations manager. "The Goodyear tires performed flawlessly this weekend. We were in a good position in nearly every class this weekend and to come away with six titles shows we've got a pretty good set of tire products for NHRA competition."
NOTES: Goodyear is the leading tire manufacturer in 2000 with 61 wins in the 10 NHRA meets … Goodyear-shod cars established six new track records in the pro categories. In Funny Car, Jerry Toliver lowered the elapsed time record to 4.848-second, while Tony Pedregon's final round earned him the win and raised the speed record to 198.38 mph. Ron Krisher took both halves of the Pro Stock record, running a 6.905 ET and 198.38 mph. Randy Daniels also established dual marks at National Trail, running .538 seconds at 178.54 mph.
