Densham takes No. 7 spot in qualifying

KIRKERSVILLE, Ohio -- Gary Densham was one of the few drivers to make it down the track Friday at the Pontiac Performance NHRA Nationals at National Trail Raceway. So he's a happy guy.

Densham drove the Racebricks Chevy Monte Carlo to the No. 7 spot, turning in a 4.946-second pass at 315.49 mph.

"Only seven Funny Cars made it down the track and just four Top Fuelers made it down and to be one of those teams that made a good run is a great feeling," Densham said. "We have such a young team and I can't begin to describe how proud I am of this group. They are working and trying so hard and they are making it fun."

Densham has not posted a victory at National Trail Raceway in the past and has just one round win in his entire career. That is something that could change on Sunday.

"I think the way the team is coming around is just awesome and I have a feeling that all of our bad luck in Columbus could end this time," Densham said. "We have a good pass in the books, but we have to keep improving. We thought we made a clean pass, but we ended up hurting some parts on that pass after all. But we'll keep at it and try again Saturday."

Qualifying continues Saturday with two sessions starting at 11:30 a.m.

All the action can be seen on ESPN2. Qualifying will air at 11 p.m. (ET) on Saturday and final eliminations will start at 7 p.m. (ET) on Sunday.
