COAN LEADS RAIN SHORTENED QUALIFYING

HEBRON, Ohio. -- In the first rounds of qualifying at National Trail Raceway it was Jason Coan taking the top spot in Comp Eliminator before Mother Nature halted the action with rain showers ending the day's qualifying.

Coan, of Greentown, Ind., drove his '32 Bantam to a lap of 8.501 seconds for the No. 1 spot followed by a pair of North Central Division hitters in Steve Ambrose and Jerry Arnold in the second and third spots respectively. Coan is looking for this third North Central Division win, picking up wins earlier this year at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill., and at Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Ill.

In Super Stock it was Joseph Franco III leading the pack with a run of 10.409 seconds out of North Babylon, N.Y. Local runner John Coughlin of Delaware, Ohio, put his '07 Jegs Mail Order Cobalt in the third position as Jim Boburka split the two landing in the No. 2 qualifying spot.

Stock Eliminator racer Bret Morgan is on top in his '76 Buick Wagon while Tommy Turner out of Naples Fla., is No. 1 in the Dart Top Sportsman class with a lap of 6.969 seconds at 200.38 mph in his '06 GTO. Coughlin's brother Mike is in the sixth spot looking to repeat his performance from Route 66 Raceway where he took home the trophy in Top Sportsman.

Rounding out day one of qualifying for this weekend's NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series was Tom Elliott of Brooks, Ohio, in the Spitzer Race Cars Top Dragster category. Elliott ran 6.509 seconds at 209.33 mph with Angela Sicilia of Salem, Ohio, in second and Dean Karns Jr. of Fairborn, Ohio, in third. Ohio racers took seven of the top ten qualifying spot in Top Dragster including the top five positions.

The rain forced officials to cancel the opening round of qualifying for Top Alcohol Dragster and Funny Cars. Both classes are scheduled to make two qualifying runs tomorrow leading into Sunday's eliminations. Those sessions are scheduled for 1 and 5 p.m. tomorrow.

Racing continues Saturday at 9 a.m. Gates open at 8 a.m. Tickets are $15 Saturday or Sunday. Children 6-12 are $5 and 5 and under are free. The track is located on U.S. 40 between Highway 158 (exit 122) and highway 37 (exit 126) off Interstate 70, east of Columbus.
