Kalitta no.1 qualifier in Columbus; sets national records at National Trail Raceway

Columbus, Ohio, June 14, 2003 -- After waiting out a long rain delay in Saturday's qualifying action at the Pontiac Excitement NHRA Nationals, Mac Tools/Kalitta Motorsports Top Fuel dragster driver Doug Kalitta gave drag racing fans at National Trail Raceway in Columbus, Ohio their best reason for enduring torrential rains and occasionally ankle-deep mud. Kalitta drove his specially painted Wright Brothers 100 Years of Aviation Celebration dragster to a new track record elapsed time of 4.508 seconds in the final qualifying session to become low qualifier for the seventh time in the 2003 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series season. Kalitta's speed of 325.69 mph in Saturday's first qualifying session also established a track record at the historic Ohio drag strip.

"It was on a strong run," Kalitta said referring to his 4.508-second blast. "It carried the front end out there. I was just about ready to get out of it because it was up pretty high. In our car, we don't run a wheelie bar on it, but it came back down and settled in and motored down through. Running a 50 (4.50 seconds) out here is pretty amazing. Being low qualifier in Columbus is great because Columbus is the corporate headquarters for Mac Tools. Now, we just need to carry this over into Sunday. The weather is supposed to be good tomorrow, so we will come out here and do our best and see what happens."

Kalitta will match up against Chris Karamesines in the first round of final eliminations that begin at 11:00 a.m. (EST) Sunday.
