Herbert beats John Smith, loses to Kalitta at Columbus
COLUMBUS, Ohio, June 15, 2003 - Doug Herbert won his first round of racing in a month Sunday at the Pontiac Excitement Nationals at National Trail Raceway and he was encouraged with the performance of his Snap-on Racing Top Fuel dragster.
"We got so far off base at Chicago (two weeks ago when he did not qualify) that it took us a while to get back on track," Herbert said after his second round loss to Doug Kalitta. "I think we're on the right track now. We learned something for our next race at St. Louis. We had changes in weather conditions every day and we're getting our act together."
One of Friday's qualifying sessions was rained out and Saturday's two runs were delayed by rain for four hours, putting the last session in optimum nighttime conditions when Herbert qualified ninth at 4.668 seconds, 314.46 mph.
Herbert beat John Smith in the first round with an engine-exploding 4.703 at 299.06 while Smith came in with a 5.004 at 269.29.
"We broke a rod on the run and that really cost us," said Herbert. "The oil down (from the broken engine) cost us 10 points and a fine, and that hurt us in points."
Herbert's tires lost traction against Kalitta that slowed him to a 5.267 at 193.54 to Kalitta's 4.724 at 298.80.
The Cherryville, N.C., driver is eighth in POWERade Series points with 533. Losing the 10 points dropped him below seventh-place Smith's 538.
Herbert and the Snap-on team return to action at the Sears Nationals, June 27-29, at St. Louis.
