Columbus, OH, June 11, 2004 - After a rainy day in the Central-Ohio area, the clouds finally broke in the late afternoon and qualifying got underway for the Pontiac Excitement Nationals at National Trail Raceway, in Columbus, Ohio. Former Funny Car champion Cruz Pedregon drove the Advance Auto Parts Chevrolet Monte Carlo to an elapsed time of 5.587 seconds at 213.03 mph to qualify 14th after two sessions.
"We're still having some issues with dropping cylinders during our runs," explained Tony Shortall, crew chief of the Advance Auto Parts Funny Car. "We've changed the ignition system and it's obviously not the problem. Now, we're going to look into the fuel system and see if we can't find the problem there. The team is going to stay late tonight to try and get it figured out. They're working very hard and I'm still very confident that we're going to find it and get back on track."
"When things aren't going the way they should, this is when it's vital that a team works together, and this team is doing just that," said Pedregon. "They're just as eager to find the problem as I am, so I have all the confidence in the world for this team and that we'll keep plugging away until we find it."
Two more qualifying sessions are scheduled for tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. (ET). Final eliminations will begin at 11:00 a.m. (ET) on Sunday.
ESPN2 will televise one hour of qualifying coverage of the NHRA Nationals on Saturday, June 12th from 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. (ET). Three hours of final eliminations coverage will air on Sunday, June 13th on ESPN2 from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. (ET).
