Columbus, Ohio (June 18) - Brian "Lump" Self had what he considered a very good weekend at the 36th Annual Pontiac Excitement Nationals in Columbus, Ohio. After qualifying his Roof-Tec Chevrolet S-10 in the sixth position on the Pro Stock Truck eliminations ladder, he marched through Round 1 and 2, before falling to Randy Daniels in the Semi-finals.
On his way to the semi's Lump would defeat Greg Stanfield in Round 1. Lump would run a 7.611 / 175.87 mph to Stanfield's 7.632 / 176.42 mph. In Round 2 Lump defeated Coughlin on a hole shot, when he ran 7.598 / 176.65 mph to Coughlin's quicker 7.575 / 176.65 mph. It was the .436 light that Lump cut on Coughlin that made the difference at the finish line.
Self met eventual race winner Randy Daniels in the semi-final round. Daniels ran a 7.565 / 178.24 mph to defeat Self's 7.613 / 176.49 mph.=20
"Hey I'm not unhappy," said Lump. "I feel like we really did have a great weekend. Of course it could have been better, but we plan on going all the way to the winner's circle in St. Louis.
"We ran well, and the truck is where we want it. We are just a couple hundredths off. Really that's just a couple of horsepower or a good light away from winning. More times than not, to get to the winner's circle you need to be lucky. Bob (Panella) and Randy (Daniels) both got lucky breaks today. There were times when they could, and should have, been taken out. They had some racing luck. What I need is a little racing luck to get my first win. It will come, until then we are going to just keep doing what we are doing.
The next stop on the NHRA Drag Racing Series is the 3rd Annual Sears Craftsman Nationals in St. Louis, Mo. June 22-24.
