WEICKGENANNT QUALIFIES A STRONG 12TH AT THE PONTIAC EXCITEMENT NATIONALS COLUMBUS, OH - After having to stand on their first qualifying pass from Friday afternoon, Bob Weickgenannt and the Columbia, MD based B&B Racing fuel Funny Car team is qualified in the twelfth position for Sunday's final eliminations at the Pontiac Excitement Nationals in Columbus, OH.
Friday's first pass yielded the team a 5.113 second elapsed time at 299.60 MPH. The team elected not to make the second qualifying pass on Friday when they found they hurt more equipment than originally thought on the first pass. Saturday's first pass brought a 10.10 second pass that destroyed the engine. On that pass, the car shook hard and spun the tires shortly after it left the starting line, making a violent move toward the center line. Weickgenannt crossed the center line and took out several timing cones before the engine ate itself alive. Because of the amount of work necessary to repair the car, co-crew chiefs Keith Platt and Dennis Whitestone decided that the 5.113 would be strong enough to make the field and they would not make the final qualifying pass.
The decision not to run proved to be a good one as the car only dropped two positions in the field during that session. B&B Racing's entry will face Tony Pedregon in the first round on Sunday.
The 5.113 second elapsed time, 299.60 MPH and the 12th qualifying position for elmiminations are all "bests" for the team.
Sunday's eliminations at the the Pontiac Excitement Nationals begin at 11am with Opening Ceremonies.
