CLEVES, Ohio - Earlier in the year, NHRA Federal Mogul Funny Car racer Marc White couldn't seem to get the Etterman Racing 2001 Firebird past the semifinals at any races he attended. Even after qualifying No. 1 and making some of the best runs of the year for the class, White just couldn't get the cards to fall his way. White broke the semifinals jinx at the NHRA Sportsman All-Stars race, however, with a runner-up finish, and has won his last two events, the Sears Craftsman Nationals in St. Louis, and a Division 3 event in Columbus, Ohio. Coming into this weekend's NHRA Division 3 Federal Mogul Drag Racing Series race at Edgewater Motorsports Park in Cleeves, Ohio, White not only hopes to keep his win streak alive, but also to maintain the Division 3 points lead.
White, from Glendale Heights, Ill., enters the event with a slim 19 point lead over the defending Division 3 Champ, and 'arch rival' on the divisional trail, Chuck Cheeseman. At their last race in Columbus, Cheeseman held a slight performance advantage most of the event, but White made up for it on the starting line to win on a holeshot in the finals. With that in mind, he hopes to improve the team's "hot weather" tune-up this weekend.
"We're definitely going to reevaluate our tune-up for hot, greasy race tracks," said White. "We dodged bullets in Columbus, and fortunately came away with a win, but with the way we ran, I sure didn't think we were going to come away with a win. It just worked out in our favor. We'll just keep trying to refine our tune-up, and keep trying to go faster."
In Columbus, Cheeseman paced the field with high 5.80's and low 5.90's under hot conditions, similar to what are forecasted for this weekend. White feels the same kind of times will be what it takes to win at Edgewater.
"If the weather is what it looks like it's going to be: hot and muggy like it usually is," commented White, "high 5.80's and low 5.90's will probably be what it takes to get the job done."
Qualifying begins at 4 p.m. for the Federal Mogul Funny Cars on Friday.
