Pomona, CA (February 6, 1999) On the strength of a 4.953-second, 307.16 miles-per-hour pass run during Saturday's first qualifying session, Whit Bazemore qualified his Kendall Oil/ Superwinch Camaro Z28 Funny Car 3rd for Sunday's final eliminations of the AutoZone Winternationals at Pomona Raceway. This represents Bazemore's best qualifying effort at this event, bettering his previous best of fifth from 1996. Bazemore's 4.96 in the afternoon time trial set the stage for his first round encounter with number 14 qualifier Al Hofmann as Bazemore looks to make his eliminations debut in the Chuck Etchells Racing entry. Bazemore last faced Hofmann at last year's Mopar Parts Mile-High Nationals in Denver, when he eliminated the Umatilla, Florida driver in the second round.

"That first run was probably the most important one we have had this year at Chuck Etchells Racing, because we knew we were the last pair in the night session, which would make it difficult to qualify," stated Bazemore. "It was a crucial run, and the Kendall Oil/Superwinch Camaro team gave me a great car. I can't speak highly enough of this Tim Richards-led crew. This is our first time out with a new team, so were still feeling each other out. But we're qualified number three at the AutoZone Winternationals - you can't ask for more than that."

"As for Al Hofmann, he's a tough competitor, and the Kendall Oil/Superwinch team will have to have our act together if we're to get by him. It will be a good race, and I'm looking forward to it. Tomorrow is a new day, and it's going to be good."
