Firebird International Raceway proved to be a 1,320-foot puzzle on Friday, as Funny Car teams struggled to get traction in the first qualifying session for the Checker Schuck's Kragen Nationals. After their initial effort ended in a cloud of tire smoke, Whit Bazemore and the Kendall Motor Oil/Matco Tools Camaro Z28 Racing Team were determined to find the combination that would get them down the track and into Sunday's final eliminations. The result was a solid 5.031-second pass, which came with the top speed recorded in Funny Car to this point at 307.51 mph. This placed Bazemore 5th with two sessions remaining on Saturday.

"At the time we ran it, that 5.03 seemed like a pretty good lap. Our set-up was a little on the conservative side for three reasons: First, the track surface had been somewhat questionable in the first session. Second, we were one of the first pairs to run in the afternoon, so we couldn't quite tell how the track was and third, we had smoked the tires in our first run.

"The team's main intent was to go from A to B and get the car solidly in the show, which is what we accomplished. Tomorrow we can go out there and play. The pressure is off as far as qualifying, so Tim (crew chief Richards) and the team can now spend Saturday refining the tune-up and getting the performance of our Kendall/Matco Camaro where they want it to be."
