ETCHELLS AIMS TO BE KING OF THE MOUNTAIN IN DENVER
Putnam, Conn., July 9, 1998 - One would not normally expect a successful businessman from the quiet little town of Putnam, Connecticut to be called a "mountain man". However, a quick glance at Chuck Etchells' record at the NHRA Mopar Parts Mile-High Nationals reveals him to be a regular Paul Bunyan. In the last six years, the Kendall Oil/MaMa Rosa's Pizza/Superwinch Camaro Z28 pilot has chopped down the opposition, advancing to the final round an impressive four times, and winning the event in 1992. Therefore, it is quite understandable that the entire Chuck Etchells Racing
Team is anxious to return to Denver, Colorado and Bandimere Speedway for next weekend's event.
"This race is one that we all look forward to, for several reasons," stated Etchells. "First of all, this is a neat part of the country, and we always have a lot of fun when we come here. On top of that, the Bandimere family is one of the nicest you would ever want to meet, and they put on a great event. Of course, it doesn't hurt that we usually run well here!"
But past accomplishments and friendly surroundings will mean little once the teams pull into the Colorado quarter-mile on Thursday. The Etchells crew is in a Funny Car championship dogfight, and as the NHRA schedule enters its second half, every event gains added importance. With every qualifying attempt and elimination round there are valuable Winston points to be gained, and with only four markers separating them from the top, this veteran team is resolved to grabbing as many as they can. In that same vein, this weekend marks the start of the NHRA's traditional three-races -in-three-weeks "West Coast Swing", and a team's performance in this period could make a strong statement for their chances during the rest of the year. Coming off their third final round appearance of the season two weeks ago in Madison, the Etchells team will look to maintain their forward momentum. To do so, however, they will have to continue their mastery of the Bandimere Speedway surface. Nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains at an altitude of over 5,800 feet, this facility offers an abundance of beautiful scenery, but at a cost of wafer-thin air. The challenge will not lie in chasing national records, but in besting your rivals by extracting every ounce of speed that the track has to offer. These prospects suit the Chuck Etchells Racing team just fine.
"For whatever reason, Tim and Kim (Richards, Etchells' talented co-crew chiefs) have always had a great tune-up for this track," explained Etchells. "This year we expect things to be even better because of our new Camaro Z28 body. The extra downforce it generates should prove very useful in the thin air. Even so, it's shaping up to be another battle in the Fun ny Car division, and the Kendall Oil/MaMa Rosa's Pizza/Superwinch Racing Team is determined to leave Denver on top!"
