FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: NHRA Communications (626) 914-4761 NEW, STATE-OF-THE-ART NHRA FACILITY NEAR CHICAGO TAKING SHAPE JOLIET, Ill. -- Construction of Route 66 Raceway, site of the inaugural NHRA national event in the Chicago area in May 1998, is moving at a brisk pace. "The weather has been in our favor," said Dale Coyne, Route 66 Raceway president and chief executive officer. "We're definitely on schedule to open our inaugural season with the NHRA national event in May and are putting the finishing touches on our complete 1998 schedule. We're really looking forward to getting underway." The newest NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series event is scheduled for May 28-31, 1998 at Route 66 Raceway. The $20-million facility is located 20 miles southwest of Chicago. Extensive concrete work has started, as a 500-foot concrete launch pad on the racetrack has been poured. Footings for the racetrack's retaining walls, which will be 39 inches tall and extend to the end of the shutdown area, also have been poured. The entire track will be illuminated by a state-of-the-art Musco lighting system, which will be installed shortly. Construction of the grandstands will start soon. All 30,000 grandstand seats have been ordered. Every seat will have a back and be within 450 feet of the starting line, as Route 66 Raceway is the first drag-racing facility in the world to feature a stadium design. Grandstands will join both sides of the control tower, surrounding the dragstrip and forming a complete, horseshoe-like enclosure like those found at football and baseball stadiums throughout the United States. The first floor of the corporate-hospitality suite building is under construction. Landscaping of the 250-acre facility is well underway, and gravel has been added to the parking areas. -30- 10/16/97-GR40-164
