JOLIET, IL (May 30) - Things are running pretty smoothly for Larry Dixon right now, and that is just the way he intends to keep it heading into this weekend's (June 1-4) Third Annual Prestone Route 66 Nationals at Route 66 Raceway.
Dixon, crew chief Dick LaHaie and the Miller Lite Team are hitting on all cylinders right now as they have placed the Don Prudhomme-owned Miller Lite Dragster in three final rounds out of the last four NHRA events this season. A fourth finals appearance looked promising for Dixon at Englishtown, NJ just two weeks ago where he qualified on the pole for the ninth time in his career, but was unable to race as the event was rescheduled due to rain and cold temperatures.
By winning twice after reaching three final rounds this quickly in the season, Dixon has shown that the 2000 campaign will already go down as one of the best in his six-year driving career. His three finals match his number of NHRA title rounds in a single season for both 1996 and '97, while bettering his 1998 effort where he won just one event in two final rounds.
"Unless something really crazy happens, I expect our team to have the same consistency that we have had stick with us for a while," said Dixon. "As long as the Miller Lite team keeps on doing a great job servicing the car, Dick LaHaie makes great calls and I continue to do a decent job driving, we will win our share of races."
Specifically, the 33-year-old Indianapolis resident feels that the conditions this weekend in Illinois can play right into the hands of tuner LaHaie who has shown a knack already this year for negotiating hot and humid race tracks.
"Chicago should be very similar to last week in Dallas with the warm temperatures and humid conditions," said Dixon. "Dick LaHaie is pretty savvy at some of the hotter tracks, so I am really looking forward to getting over there and running well this weekend."
