Kalitta, Force, Johnson, Seeling, Panella Lead Friday Qualifying at Fram Route 66 Nationals By Rick Green

JOLIET, Ill. - SUMMIT FastNews - Doug Kalitta grabbed the Top Fuel provisional pole on Day One of the 2nd annual Fram Route 66 Nationals with a 4.543 second elapsed time at 313.73 miles per hour. Gary Scelzi, Joe Amato, and Larry Dixon round out the top four in the category, all with runs in the 4.50's. John Force, in his Castrol GTX Ford Mustang, continues his strangle hold on the Funny Car category. He leads the number two-qualifier Whit Bazemore by a tenth of a second, with a 4.856 second run at 313.44 mph. Jerry Toliver in his WWF-sponsored Firebird and Dean Skuzain his Dodge Avenger round out the top four; they are the only Funny Cars to eclipse the five-second barrier so far this weekend. Jack Wyatt ran a career-best 5.184 seconds at 282.36 miles per hour to qualify in the number sixteen spot. The capacity crowd came to their feet when hometown favorite Dale Creasy Jr. experienced his first-ever Funny Car fire tonight in his Mad Magazine Pontiac Firebird. "The car was on a good pass and when I got to the finish line I looked down and saw fire," said the surprised driver. He credited Gary Bolger, who had told him, "When -- not if, but when -- you catch on fire to just stay calm and get the car stopped, after you get out you can panic." According to Creasy, the fire looked worse than what it was, but they did not plan to make the morning qualifying session tomorrow, so they could make sure the car is 100%. Kurt Johnson rebounded from his DNQ at Englishtown to take the early lead in qualifying in Pro Stock. Johnson took #1 qualifier honors away from his dad in the evening session, while Mike Edwards moved ahead of Allen Johnson for the third spot. The top sixteen qualifiers are separated by less than 0.09 seconds after just two rounds of qualifying. Team Winston racer Angelle Seeling holds down the top spot in Pro Stock Motorcycle, but Matt Hines took top speed honors. In Pro Stock Truck, Bob Panella leads Mark Osborne and Jerry Haas after two rounds. Pro category qualifying resumes tomorrow, along with the Holley Dominator Duel for Pro Stock Trucks and eliminations in the sportsman categories. Action is scheduled to begin at 8:00 am, with the professional category qualifying sessions are scheduled for 11:00 am and 3:00 pm. Final eliminations will begin Sunday morning.
