WILK'S FINAL LAP A POSITIVE ONE
For the first time in drag racing history, this sentence shall be written: Tim Wilkerson qualified 7th in his Levi, Ray & Shoup Shelby Mustang, and will therefore race out of Group C in the first round at the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals. Group C consists of Wilkerson, Ron Capps, Melanie Troxel, and Jeff Diehl. The first two from the group who cross the finish line in their 4-wide race, will advance to face their winning counterparts from Group D, made up of Jack Beckman, Bob Tasca, John Force, and Tony Pedregon. For the record, Group A consists of Robert Hight (No. 1 qualifier), Paul Lee, Jeff Arend, and Matt Hagan. Group B is made up of Ashley Force Hood, Bob Gilbertson, Del Worsham, and Cruz Pedregon.
"We kind of messed up for a couple of runs here, and on the last one our goal was to go A-to-B and get down there under power," Wilkerson said. "We didn't improve on the 4.08, but the 4.118 was a nice solid lap and we got it up over 300 mph, too, so that's good. We've had the chance to run in all four lanes here, and there's really no major differences, but we do have a bit of a book on what we think of each one. As the second-highest qualified team in the group, we get second choice, so after Capps and his guys pick, we'll have three to choose from and I'm sure we'll be fine with whatever we get.
"Now, we'll go out there and try to be one of the first two across the line. There's nothing you can do about the other three cars, so it's really no different than the standard two-wide deal. You just go out there and race the lane, and in the end we'll hope we got there first or second so we can move on. There really weren't too many problems here today, in terms of staging or organizing everyone, so hopefully everyone will stay focused and we won't have any issues on Sunday. I'm looking forward to it."
