zMAX Dragway Releases Action Packed 2010 Schedule
CONCORD, N.C. (Dec. 18, 2009) - "Over the top" is a phrase easily associated with zMAX Dragway. From the facility's lavish amenities to the ability to race the fastest-accelerating machines on the planet four abreast, the Bellagio of drag strips has already carved its niche in the annals of drag racing history in less than two years of existence.
In 2010, zMAX Dragway's event schedule will match the grandeur of the facility itself. The addition of a second NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series date in March and the return of SPEED's popular drag racing show PINKS All Out are just two of the events that help make the 2010 schedule at zMAX Dragway the best in drag racing. Plus, with the new zMAX Dragway season ticket package, fans can enjoy 27-percent savings while reserving seats to all of the action at the sport's premier facility.
"The 2010 schedule at zMAX Dragway is a drag racing fan's dream come true," said Christian Byrd, general manager of zMAX Dragway. "From street cars to nitro-breathing Top Fuel dragsters and everything in between, we have something for everyone this upcoming season, including the ability to race these machines side-by-side-by-side-by-side. Four-wide drag racing was resurrected at zMAX Dragway in 2009 and our fans can expect to see much more of that in 2010 and beyond."
March promises to go out like a lion when the NHRA comes to zMAX Dragway for the inaugural NHRA spring national event on March 25-28. The additional NHRA date makes zMAX Dragway only the third track on the NHRA schedule and the only track east of the Rocky Mountains to receive a second date.
How big will PINKS All Out be in April? Nearly 400 cars registered in less than 20 minutes on Dec. 14, when registration opened to the public.
"Our inaugural appearance at zMAX Dragway was unprecedented in many respects with the first-ever televised four-wide racing the undeniable highlight of the day," said Robert Ecker, SPEED vice president of programming and PINKS All Out executive producer.
"The bar was set pretty high on that one, and for our return engagement we promise a more demanding level of competition. Whoever's left standing on April 24 will have survived a day of racing unlike any in PINKS All Out history; it's going to be that big."
The summer months will be chock full of drag racing with the introduction of the Summer Drag & Brag street-racing events; six evenings of street racing, where anyone with a driver's license, helmet and car registration can battle for bragging rights on the concrete quarter-mile.
In August, two of the country's top sanctioning bodies for street-legal drag racing, the National Muscle Cars Association (NMCA) and the National Mustang Racers Association (NMRA), will again converge at zMAX Dragway for a three-day national competition. The All-Stars Nationals will include two separate car shows, a massive vendor midway, a sprawling swap meet and the legendary burnout contest.
The NHRA returns to zMAX Dragway for the event that started it all, the third annual NHRA Carolinas Nationals, Sept. 16-19. All four professional categories will be in action for the second round of the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Countdown to 1.
Last September, drag racing fans witnessed a historical moment when for the first time, four modern Top Fuel dragsters and four nitro Funny Cars went four-wide down the drag strip. Spencer Massey won the Top Fuel pass on a hole shot, as did Mike Neff in Funny Car, but it was Neff's car owner, and fellow four-wide participant, that put it into perspective.
"I have not had this much excitement since high school football, when we charged the cheerleaders' showers," said John Force, 14-time NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Funny Car champion.
The final event of the 2010 calendar will occur during the 17th annual Goodguys Southeastern Nationals, when pre-1972 hot rods, custom cars, classics, muscle cars and trucks descend on zMAX Dragway for the return of Friday Night Drags.
