MCCLENATHAN QUALIFIES FRAM DRAGSTER NO. 2 IN CONCORD

CONCORD, N.C. (Sept. 13, 2008) -- FRAM Top Fuel dragster driver Cory McClenathan qualified No. 2 today at the Inaugural Carolinas Nationals at zMax Dragway @ Concord. He earned the No. 2 spot for the second straight event and qualified in the top half of the 16-car field for the 12th time this season with an elapsed time of 3.863 seconds at 312.13 mph, set Friday evening.

He also made qualifying runs of 3.903/312.71 (No. 2), 3.945/301.07 (No. 2) and 3.908/310.70 (No. 2). It was a consistent showing for McClenathan, who is looking to claim his first Top Fuel championship after 17 years competing in the class and finishing No. 2 four times.

"The FRAM dragster has been very consistent this weekend and that's the biggest thing, whether it's during the Friday night session or during the heat of the day," said McClenathan, who is No. 4 in points going into this weekend's first event of the Countdown to 1 playoffs. "And it's been warm here. I think the fact that the entire track is concrete has made a huge difference. The concrete doesn't absorb the heat the same as asphalt does. If it was all asphalt we'd be in trouble out there. You can already see where this is going to be a fantastic track and under the right conditions, such as when it's cooler, you could really run some great numbers here.

"As far as the FRAM dragster is concerned, I'm very confident going into eliminations on Sunday. The Countdown starts tomorrow, so my job starts tomorrow. It's a big deal. We need to go some rounds and not worry about winning the race. We need to go one round farther than everybody else can go and take out as many people as possible.

"We start off with Clay Millican in the first round. He's a good leaver and a good driver and his crew chief Lance Larson does a great job. I know they'll figure it out, so we just need to go out there and do our job tomorrow and see if we can get through first round and keep on going. (Crew chief) Mike Green and the guys are doing a great job with this FRAM Top Fuel dragster."
