BRISTOL, Tenn. (June 12) – Morgan Lucas, driver of the powerful GEICO/Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster, rolls into this weekend's 12th annual Ford NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals with the kind of confidence that comes from racing a proven car on a great racetrack.
"It's my favorite track to race at and to even just watch racing," Lucas said. "I've been looking forward to this weekend for a long time. We like to watch some of qualifying from the motor home at the top of the hill, everywhere you turn at this track there's something new to see.
"We just want to try and put on a clinic this weekend. Thunder Valley is one of those tracks where I've always wanted to win. This weekend would be a perfect time to get it done."
Keeping in the theme of the summertime months, the GEICO team always tries to get in a little recreation when they can, and its visit to Eastern Tennessee is no exception.
"We're going to go boating on Thursday," Lucas said. "It's a chance for us to all relax and press the reset button a little bit to get our heads right for a long weekend of racing. The cool thing is we all like to hang out with each other. The camaraderie of this crew has been fantastic."
Lucas has two wins and four No. 1 qualifiers through eight races this season. He's been holding down fourth place in the Top Fuel standings for a few events now, and is expecting the momentum to keep rolling as the series heads to Tennessee.
"The performance we'll get will be dictated by the weather," Lucas said. "Conditions are pretty unpredictable at that track. I've seen it hot, seen it cold, I've sat through rain and hail – just about anything can happen in those hills.
"The mountains around the track can really change the conditions in a hurry. You've got to be as perfect you possibly can be every time you roll up to the line."
