Qualifying for this year's Pontiac Excitement Nationals proved to be a test of the teams' patience and tuning skills, as weather conditions seemed to be in a state of perpetual change. Tom Martino and the CENTURY 21 Firebird Racing team proved up to the challenge, improving each time down the track. His final attempt of 6.978 seconds, which came with a top speed of 196.36 miles per hour, qualified Martino 5th for Sunday's final eliminations. This set the stage for a first-round encounter with 12th qualifier Allen Johnson. Despite this performance, Martino was hard at work on Saturday evening, looking for even greater improvement. "We've been creeping up on the CENTURY 21 Firebird throughout the weekend. Even though we ran quicker on every run, and qualified well, I'm sure we can do better. We have a lot of data to go over before tomorrow morning, and some additional adjustments to make. We've cleared the first hurdle by qualifying in the top half of the field. That gives us lane choice for the first round tomorrow, which history shows to be very important at this track. Our goal is to go rounds and maintain lane choice. I know we're capable, it's just up to us to get it done."
