BRISTOL, Tennessee - Cory McClenathan beat defending champion John Force and the Castrol GTX Ford Mustang in the second round Sunday en route to victory in the second annual Winston No Bull Showdown at Bristol Dragway.
Neither Force nor Castrol SYNTEC teammate Tony Pedregon were able to mount much of a challenge to a dominating Top Fuel contingent which avenged last year's loss in impressive fashion.
McClenathan, who lost to Force in last year's semifinals, earned $200,000 for the victory in drag racing's official All-Star event.
Castrol Super Clean Pro Stock Truck Driver Steve Johns made the eight-vehicle lineup as one of the seeded drivers on the strength of his victory in last November's AAA of Southern California Finals at Pomona, Calif.
Ironically, teammate Rob Slavinski DIDN'T make the final cut even though he was quicker than Johns in qualifying. Johns qualified his Super Clean Chevy S-10 at 7.712 seconds. Slavinski ran 7.707 seconds but that was only the third best time among drivers who weren't automatically qualified and there was room in the field for only two.
WINNERS: Winston Showdown, Top Fuel dragsters versus Funny Cars, Cory McClenathani defeated Ron Capps; Pro Stock, Troy Coughlin defeated Mark Pawuk; Pro Stock Motorcycle, Matt Hines defeated Antron Brown; Pro Stock Truck, Bob Panella Jr. defeated Randy Daniels. NEXT EVENT: Mopar Mile-High Nationals, July 14-16, Bandimere Speedway Park, Denver, Colorado.
JOHN FORCE, Castrol GTX Ford Mustang Qualifying position: 8th Race Results: Beat David Grubnic; lost to Cory McClenathan.
Notable: In a replay of the 1999 semifinals, Cory Mac got his revenge as Force's Castrol GTX Ford dropped a cylinder and slowed from 4.987 second first round to a 5.186 second time on Sunday. Quotable: "It wasn't our day but we did make five more runs with our new Mustang bodies and that'll be big for Denver." - John Force
TONY PEDREGON, Castrol SYNTEC Ford Mustang Qualifying position: 5th. Race Results: Beat Kenny Bernstein; lost to Tony Schumacher.
Notable: Pedregon went a round further than he did in 1999 and made five runs with the new Tim Gibson-designed body which are certain to help him when he defends his Funny Car title this week at the Mopar Mile-High Nationals at Denver. Quotable: "We beat Kenny Bernstein, a five-time Winston Champion in round one and lost to Tony Schumacher, the current Top Fuel Champion, in round two. That's some pretty good competition." - Tony Pedregon.
ROB SLAVINSKI, Castrol Super Clean Chevrolet S-10 Truck
Qualifying position: DNQ at 7.707 seconds.. Notable: Would have made the lineup with ease in any other event but was ninth Sunday for an eight-truck field. Quotable: "For the first time in a long time, I feel like we made progress. Now I can't wait for the second half to start." - Rob Slavinski.
STEVE JOHNS, Castrol Super Clean Chevrolet S-10 Truck Qualifying position: 7th at 7.712 seconds Race Results: Lost to John Coughlin. Notable: Came within .009 of upsetting Coughlin.
