(BRISTOL, Tenn., May 1): Tony Pedregon and his Q Power Race Team qualified 12th for the O'Reilly NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals Presented by Q at Bristol (Tenn.) Dragway this past weekend in the NHRA Nitro Funny Car division, but exited the race early after a first round loss.
"We got beat in the first round, but I am still encouraged that we'll go to Atlanta next weekend and get back to where our team should be," Pedregon stated. "In this sport, we learn what works as much as what doesn't work. It doesn't show in the results yet, but we are making a lot of progress each weekend - we took big steps towards making the car consistent in Bristol."
Pedregon, who has twice qualified in the top spot in Bristol (2002, 2003), understood the problems the Q Power team encountered there and knows that what they learned will help them for the rest of the season: "In the first round of eliminations, we had a big lead on Johnson, but it was unfortunate that there were some bumps in my lane. When I hit those bumps, the car unloaded and the front of the car bounced. I tried to correct it in the air, and when it came down, it steered to the right. But mechanically we are sound, and I'm really looking forward to Atlanta (Pedregon won in Atlanta in 1996 and 2003)."
Coming off of his first DNQ in 114 races two weeks ago in Las Vegas, and after working through issues in Bristol, Pedregon is looking forward to next weekends battle in Atlanta: "I'm expecting much better results in Atlanta -- I am confident we'll get back to our old form. I know we can go to Atlanta and qualify in the top half of the field, which is important because that gives us lane choice. I'm really excited about our chances there. You can't keep a good team down."
In 2005, Tony Pedregon and the Q Power Race Team finished 7th in points with two wins, was #1 qualifier three times and recorded the second quickest elapsed time in NHRA history at 4.680 seconds in Chicago.
