JOHNSON JR. QUALIFIES FIFTH AT BRISTOL DRAGWAY
BRISTOL, Tenn. (April 29, 2006) -- For the second consecutive race, Tommy Johnson Jr. drove his Skoal Racing Funny Car to the No. 5 qualifying position. The seven-time NHRA winner recorded a qualifying-best elapse! d time of 4.791-seconds as qualifying for the sixth annual O'Reilly Thunder Valley Nationals concluded Saturday at Bristol Dragway.
Johnson's quickest pass of the two days of professional qualifying came on Friday's second attempt as he drove his Mike Green-tuned Chevy flopper to a performance of 4.791 seconds at 323.97 mph under the lights at Bristol Dragway. It was the quickest pass that Johnson has recorded at Bristol Dragway. The Skoal Racing team came back on Saturday as Johnson blasted to a run of 4.853 at 319.27 to conclude qualifying at the famed Tennessee drag strip. It marks the 13th time in his career that Johnson will start from the No. 5 position.
"The car is running really well," Johnson said. "We almost made it on the first run today. It came loose a little further down track than most cars. This track is tricky when the sun is on the track. The conditions changed so drastically before the final run that we didn't have time to make all the changes we needed to. It was still a decent mid-4.80 run. I'm confident we can set the car up for all conditions. There's no reason we shouldn't go rounds on Sunday."
Johnson, who entered the event ranked third in the Funny Car standings, will match-up against No. 12 qualifier Tony Pedregon in the opening round of Funny Car eliminations on Sunday afternoon at Thunder Valley. Johnson has a 7-8 career recorded versus the 2003 NHRA champion in head-to-head Funny Car competition.
