HAMMONDS OUT IN FIRST ROUND OF ELIMINATIONS
(BRISTOL, Tenn., May 18, 2008) - - Tom Hammonds was knocked out in the first round of eliminations at O'Reilly NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals today.
"We were please to be qualified and actually to have a chance to race in the first round of eliminations, but I am a competitor and have been a competitor my whole life. We are satisfied with the run, but we still have a lot of work to do," said Hammonds.
Hammonds' first round run was solid with him being in the lead until 1/8 marker of the track, where Dave Connolly turned on the speed to pass him for the win. He registered an elapsed time of 6.795 seconds at 202.18 mph.
"Whatever it is, as far as our engines are concerned, we are not performing in the back half of the track. So, we need to go back to the shop and look at everything and make sure we are better prepared to be able to go out here and fight with these guys."
Before racing, there was a three hour weather delay, which Hammonds felt was not a factor in his loss today. He believes because all the drivers had the same weather delay, everyone would be in agreement that the runs were not perfect, and he may have had a little time to second guess himself.
Overall, he was excited about qualifying for today's competition and that the car performed well not experiencing mechanical problems that has plagued his Chevy Cobalt in the past. His only disappointment is they could not have gone further. Even still he does agree the team has turned the corner to being able to be consistent with qualifying for future competitions.
"I do not want to get too ahead of myself. We still have a lot of work to do. This is just one race. I am not going to go out there and invite the circus, because we are not there yet. We have to continue to keep improving, and go to the next race to improve off this race. But, I am happy we were able to race today."
