Bristol, Tenn. (July 8): Tony Schumacher finished qualifying for the Winston Showdown as the No. 2 Top Fuel qualifier and went on to record a first round victory to prepare for Sunday's four rounds of eliminations.
In the third qualifying session of the event, Schumacher again made a solid pass down the track with his Dan Olson-tuned dragster under full power. He recorded another consistant 4.736 e.t. at 304.12 mph. Standing on his previous best, 4.693 e.t., Schumacher was set to face Funny Car pilot, Phil Burkart in the first round of eliminations.
In this event, Funny Cars are given a .280 starting line advantage to make up for the difference in performance between the two classes. It looked early on in the round that the Funny Car drivers wanted to sweep the dragsters as the first four Funny Cars claimed victory over their Top Fuel counter parts.
Schumacher left the line with an excellent .456 reaction time and cruised down the track with a 4.792 e.t. at 303.57 mph to defeat Burkart by .184 seconds. In round two, Schumacher will face Tony Pedregon, who defeated Kenny Bernstein in the first round.
"There is as much pride on the line as money," said Schumacher referring to the rivalry between classes, "we were routing for the other Top Fuel teams."
Driver introductions are scheduled for 10am. The second round of eliminations are scheduled to begin at 11am. ESPN2 will televise eliminations. Check local listings for times.
