RON CAPPS: "EVERY POINT IS CRUCIAL RIGHT NOW"
BRISTOL, Tenn. (April 25, 2006) - NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series Funny Car points leader Ron Capps is enjoying a solid 105-point margin over 13-time champion John Force as the series heads to the O'Reilly NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals this weekend at Bristol Dragway.
The driver of the Brut Dodge Stratus R/T, who's been to four final rounds in five races, winning twice, says he's having fun, but he's not that comfortable on that precarious perch. A number of challenges face Capps and crew chief Ed "Ace" McCulloch as the weather and conditions change and a string of back-to-back events loom in the future, including Bristol this weekend and Atlanta immediately following.
"Right now we are just not comfortable with the points lead we have," he says. "It's great to be leading. I'd rather be chased than doing the chasing. But you can't, this early in the year, get comfortable about a 105-point lead, especially when John Force, Gary Scelzi, Whit Bazemore and all those guys back there can run you down any time. It doesn't take much to go out early and have a guy gain a lot of points on you.
"After last season, you just don't want to leave any points on the table, whether it's round wins, qualifying or whatever," adds Capps, who has never won a Funny Car crown and who lost the championship in 2005 by a mere eight points.
As the 2001 Bristol winner, Capps would love to repeat this weekend. "Every point we look at is crucial and it would be great to win at Bristol again. I've said it before, it's been a great track for me as far as karma, mojo, and anything you want to call it.
"And for the Brut Dodge team, going to a track that has already been good to me in the past is a bonus. It's going to be a fun year and going into races like this with the points lead and getting the press for being the points leader, is a lot of fun. You have to learn to enjoy it.
"We had a bad race in Bristol last year because it rained out most of qualifying. We did get in (based on the point standings), but we didn't get the qualifying points. It wasn't the best Bristol weekend for the Brut Dodge team, but this year we're excited about coming back."
