FULLER RACES CAT RAIL TO NO. 9 SPOT AT BRISTOL
BRISTOL, Tenn. (May 17, 2008) -- Rod Fuller raced his David Powers-owned Caterpillar dragster to the No. 9 qualifying position Saturday afternoon at Bristol Dragway. Fuller's quickest qualifying attempt was 4.584 seconds on Friday evening.
Fuller, a two-time finalist at Bristol Dragway, clocked his best qualifying effort on Friday evening under the lights at Thunder Valley when he used a Rob Flynn tune-up to drive the Caterpillar/Matco Tools rail to a pass of 4.584 seconds at 316.23 mph. The Caterpillar dragster dropped cylinders on Saturday's first attempt. On his final qualifying pass, the seven-time NHRA winner powered to the second quickest elapsed time of the session, 4.585 at 322.73. The Caterpillar dragster had the fastest speed of the fourth qualifying session. Fuller now has qualified for 69 consecutive Top Fuel events.
"That last run was pretty good," Fuller said. "We were second quick of the session. We should have ran quicker on Friday night, but we dropped a hole (cylinder) on the run. We were trying some things on Saturday's first pass, but changed things back to the St. Louis setup for the last run and we laid down a good number. We don't like being first pair, but we're confident with our CAT dragster."
Fuller will face off against No. 8 qualifier J.R. Todd in the first round of eliminations at Noon (ET) on Sunday. They will likely be the first pair of dragster to go down the track on race day. Fuller won from the No. 8 position two weeks ago at St. Louis. Fuller's teammate, Antron Brown, driver of the Matco Tools dragster, qualified fourth with a run of 4.542 seconds.
