STEVENS JR. QUALIFIES NO. 8 IN BRISTOL

BRISTOL, Tenn. (April 29, 2006) - Richie Stevens Jr., driver of the Team Mopar/Valspar Dodge Stratus, continued his trend of qualifying in the top half of the 16-car Pro Stock field by grabbing the No. 8 spot for Sunday's O'Reilly NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway.

By posting a run of 6.748 seconds at 203.83 mph, Stevens has now qualified in the top half in five of the 2006 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series season's six events.

The Saturday morning pass was his best of four qualifying attempts, and his other three runs were consistent at 6.774/203.16, 6.805/203.52, and 6.791/203.40.

"We made four good runs in qualifying," he said. "We have a consistent car. I'm sure we could have been a little better, but I don't want to get too greedy.

"David (Nickens, crew chief) has been doing a good job; the car has been smooth and straight. Hopefully we can just repeat ourselves tomorrow."

Stevens faces off against fellow Mopar driver Allen Johnson in the first round of eliminations for the second straight event. "It's unfortunate that we keep matching up in the first round, but at least there will be a blue Mopar in the second round. I know this is his home track, but there are no gimmies on Sunday.

"We've got lane choice, so that will help out. I think the left lane is definitely smoother, so I'm sure we'll go with that tomorrow. Hopefully we can get some round wins. It would help us out in points, too. My buddy Dave Connolly didn't qualify, and a few other guys who are ahead of us don't have lane choice, so it could turn out very well."
