RAIN POSTPONES WINSTON SHOWDOWN

BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Persistent rain showers forced NHRA officials to postpone Saturday's eliminations for the inaugural Winston Showdown at Bristol Dragway. The $1.1 million event is NHRA's all-star race and the first to feature Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars in head-to-head competition. Racing is scheduled to resume at 12:15 p.m. Sunday. Gates will open at 10 a.m. Eight of 12 pairs of the Top Fuel-Funny Car eliminations were completed before heavy rain showers moved into the region. Whit Bazemore, Tommy Johnson Jr. and Chuck Etchells scored first round wins for the Funny Car contingent, while Top Fuel drivers Tony Schumacher, Doug Kalitta, Cory McClenathan, Gary Scelzi and top qualifier Bob Vandergriff advanced to the second round. Eight-time Winston Funny Car champion John Force will face 20-year-old Top Fuel driver Cristen Powell in one of the four remaining first round Top Fuel-Funny Car match-ups, which will kick-off Sunday's racing.
