BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Mopar Parts NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series teams completed the final day of qualifying for this weekend's Mac Tools Thunder Valley NHRA Nationals at the Bristol Dragway.
The television times have been updated for tomorrow.
Final Round: Sun., April 28; 4--6 P.M.; Espn
Final Round: Sun., April 28; 6-8 P.M.; ESPN2
The following are notes and quotes following today's qualifying activity.
DEAN SKUZA, driver of the Mopar Parts Dodge Stratus R/T
Dean Skuza will face off against Bob Gilbertson in the first round of competition. The Mopar Parts Dodge Stratus R/T Nitro Funny Car driver clicked off a solid 4.909-second elapsed time at 300.73 mph to capture the fifth-qualifying position.
"We experimented a little bit today," said Skuza, who smoked the tires twice in today's sessions."We have a good set up for this track and I'm looking forward to tomorrow. We're so close right now."
GENE WILSON, driver of the Mopar Parts Dodge Neon R/T
It could be a case of being careful what you wish for. Gene Wilson, driver of the Mopar Parts Dodge Neon R/T, qualified for his first NHRA national event. That's the good news. The not so good news is that Wilson has a first round match up with defending Pro Stock World Champion Warren Johnson in round one, a result of the Canton, Ga., residents 10th qualifying slot at 6.897 seconds and 200.05 mph.
"This feels really good," Wilson said."(Team owner) David Nickens and the whole team have been working real hard on this car. Everybody is putting in 100 percent here. We come out here and we have both cars qualified. I've got a lot of friends and family here and I couldn't be any better. I'm really pumped up about it and I think we'll do really well tomorrow. It's going to be tough going up against Warren tomorrow, but I'm going to give him everything I've got. It's unfortunate that the first run I make in the NHRA is against the defending world champion. It doesn't bother me because I always go up there as if nobody was in the other lane."
LARRY MORGAN, driver of the Mopar Parts Dodge Neon R/T
Larry Morgan is still struggling. The Newark, Ohio, native failed to qualify after posting a 6.921-second lap at 200.05 mph.
"We just couldn't get the car right," Morgan commented."I think we could have been anywhere from 10th to 15th if we hit the night session right."
DARRELL ALDERMAN, driver of the Mopar Parts Dodge Neon R/T
Darrell Alderman took his Mopar Parts Dodge Neon R/T to the 12th-qualifying position with a 6.899-second elapsed at 200.38 mph. The 28-time NHRA national event winner takes on Ron Krisher in round one.
"We made a couple of nice runs in the heat today," Alderman said."We're going to play with the clutch a little bit and see if we can make a better run tomorrow."
