Tennessee's Thomas tripped up in Round 1
BRISTOL, Tenn. (July 11) -- A lengthy rain delay pushed the start of the Pro Stock elimination rounds of the Inaugural Winston Showdown at Bristol Dragway back to Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately, the waiting proved to be too much for Pennzoil Pro Stock pilot Mike Thomas, who lost his first round race against Mike Edwards at the starting line when he posted a 0.468-second start to Edwards' 0.438--second launch.
Adding to Thomas' misery is the fact that he actually outpaced Edwards on the strip, covering the quarter-mile in 7.059 seconds at 195.34 mph to Edwards' 7.083-second lap at 194.69 mph. But Edwards' starting line advantage was just enough to give him the win, as he crossed the stripe 0.006 of a second (or 21 inches) ahead of Thomas.
"That was a close one," said Thomas, who hails from nearby Knoxville. "We barely missed the clutch set-up and I barely missed having a good light and he barely beat us. We would have won almost any of the other races that round. It just seems like I can't get a break.
"Well, despite the loss, this weekend was a lot of fun. The fans really took to the car (which featured a University of Tennessee logo on the roof) and we had a blast with all of our friends and family being here at the track. I wish we could have shown everyone a better finish but we're still pretty optimistic over here in the Pennzoil pit.
"As far as the car goes, we made a lot of progress at this race. We've been having a little trouble with our launch and 60-foot times and performance so we changed some things up and it now appears that problem has been solved.
"It was an honor to take part in this race because only the best drivers were invited and assured of spots. I'm proud of the fact that we earned our way into the field and I hope we can win another race and come back to this deal next year. Maybe we can win it then."
