Whisnant qualifies 11th in Bristol.
BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Mark Whisnant, driver of the RW Performance / Snap-On Tools Chevrolet Cavalier, will enter eliminations at the 3rd annual Mac Tools Thunder Valley Nationals holding the 11th position on the Pro Stock eliminations ladder.
It was in the Saturday afternoon session of qualifying that Whisnant drove his cavalier to a 6.900 / 198.17 mph to secure his spot in tomorrow's race. On Sunday morning Whisnant, of Stockbridge, Ga., will meet Number 6 qualifier Greg Stanfield in Round 1.
"I know it sound cliche," said Whisnant, "but I'm just happy to be in the show.
"After the first session yesterday we were sitting 17th. We improved in the second session, but still ended the night sitting 17th, and on the outside looking in. It is unsettling to be that close, and still not be in the show.
"After looking at the weather this morning, we knew that we had to get in during the morning session. We knew that with the rain was coming; we might not get another chance.
"My crew chiefs Markus (Svensson) and Gary (Pearman) put their heads together, and pulled some more out of this Cavalier. We got in during the third round, but when the rain started to fall, we figured we were done for the day.
"When Safety Safari got the racetrack dried off the temperature dropped. We knew in this session it could go one way or another; either we would be racing on Sunday, or going home tonight.
"Half way through the last session we had been bumped all the way back to 19th. It was nail biting time, but Markus and Gary came through for me again. In the last session, we ran a 6.900, putting us in at 11th. It was a long day, but the result is that we are racing tomorrow, and that makes us all happy."
Eliminations at the 3rd annual Mac Tools Thunder Valley Nationals in Bristol, Tenn., begin at 12:00 PM EST on Sunday April 27.
