Dixon Qualifies Eighth at Bristol
BRISTOL, Tenn. (May 1, 2004) -- Two-time consecutive NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon powered his Miller Lite dragster to the No. 8 qualifying position Saturday as qualifying for the O'Reilly Thunder Valley Nationals completed at Bristol Dragway.
Dixon, who won the Bristol event in 2002, blasted his Dick LaHaie-tuned dragster to a performance of 4.602 seconds at 321.42 mph on his final qualifying attempt to earn the No. 8 qualifying spot and lane choice in the first round of eliminations. On Saturday's first qualifying effort, the Miller-backed rail lost traction and slowed to a run of 6.260 at 138.06.
"We have an opportunity to race on Sunday, which means we have an opportunity to win," Dixon said. "I don't think the lanes make a difference this weekend, cars have gotten down both lanes with no problem."
One of the major concerns entering the Bristol race was the change to the new Good-Year 2096 tire. NHRA mandated that all teams change to the 2096 tire beginning at the Bristol Dragway event.
"It's challenging depending on what the weather is like," said LaHaie. "When it is cool, the tires will take whatever you want to throw at it. When it starts warming up, it can be a problem."
Dixon eyes his second career victory at Thunder Valley when he battles Doug Herbert in the opening round of Top Fuel eliminations beginning at 11 a.m. (ET) on Sunday.
ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the O'Reilly Thunder Valley Nationals beginning at 7 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, May 1 and show three hours of final eliminations at 7 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, May 2.
