Bristol, Tenn. (July 9) - Larry Kopp, driver of the Speedco Truck Lube Chevy S-10, met Winston Champion Bob Panella in the first round of Pro Stock Truck eliminations the Winston Showdown in Bristol, Tenn.
Panella would take the win light when Kopp left early and red lit. Panella would run a 7.659 / 176.12 mph to Kopp's red lighting 7.772 / 173.87mph.
"Even though we lost," said Kopp, "I am still encouraged about our progress this weekend."
"When ever you can go to the racetrack and learn something it is a good day, whether it's in testing or in a race. This weekend we learned a lot about what this Speedco truck wants. We have been steadily chipping away at it and making improvement with every trip down the racetrack. We feel good about that. So even though we lost, we are still happy."
Following this event the Pro Stock Truck class will now have a six-week break before heading to Indianapolis for the US Nationals. Kopp talked about what the Speedco Truck Lube team will do on their 'summer vacation'.
"We will spend a lot of time in the next six weeks testing and working on our set-up. We would like to go completely through the truck and make sure everything is right. We will also freshen all our motors, and rebuild clutches and transmissions.=20
"We want to be ready for Indy. That is the big show. There is so much history and prestige surrounding the US Nationals that winning there is like winning a championship. There will probably be 40 or 50 trucks there. It is going to be a dogfight just to qualify. If we want to make a good showing there, we will have to be ready. We are going home to do our homework. We will be ready for Indy."
The next stop on the NHRA Pro Stock Truck tour will be the US Nationals in Indianapolis, Ind. Aug. 30 - Sept. 4.
