BRISTOL, TN (July 7) -After the first day of competition at the Second Annual Winston Showdown, Larry Dixon and the Don Prudhomme-owned Miller Lite Dragster posted a lap of 4.968 seconds at 271.90 mph on Friday to qualify in the No. 10 position among top fuel dragsters at Bristol Dragway.
Dixon, who owns one of the eight automatic berths in top fuel with his first win of the season in Houston, proved to be one of the few pilots to get down the track in the first session with his lap of 4.96 second lap. Kenny Bernstein (4.766) and Tony Schumacher (4.837) were the only two other top fuel drivers to post times under five seconds in the first session.
In the night session, the Miller Lite/Reybestos backed dragster did not fair as well, recording a time of 9.096 seconds at 90.06 mph. Snake Racing teammate Ron Capps took his U.S. Tobacco Chevy Funny Car to the No. 1 spot among non-pre-qualified drivers with his lap of 4.88 seconds.
Twelve top fuel dragsters and 12 funny cars will make up the 24-car Winston Showdown field. Eight top fuel and eight funny cars entered the weekend with automatic berths by virtue of their most previous national event wins. The top four elapsed times produced by those drivers not already qualified in both categories will vie for the four open qualifier positions.
The final two qualifying sessions of the weekend resume Saturday and are scheduled to be run at Noon and 4 PM ET. Sunday's elimination round begins at 11 AM and will be televised by ESPN 2.
