Madison, Ill. (June 22) - Brian "Lump" Self came to the Fourth Annual Sears Craftsman Nationals in St. Louis, Mo. looking to pick up where he left off last weekend in Columbus. Lump did more than pick-up, he exceeded what he thought he could do when in the second round of qualifying Lump drove his Roof-Tec Chevrolet S-10 to a 7.612 / 176.84 mph to take the third position on the Pro Stock Truck eliminations ladder.
"Boy did you see that!" said Lump. "I can't believe that I ran that fast. I had to look at the time slip twice to be sure. I am just tickled to death. That is the kind of run that I knew was in this truck. We just kept getting better in Columbus, and I had a good feeling about St. Louis. Boy was I ever right!
"I ran along side of Bob (Panella). I was in the right lane, which is not a good as the left. When I left the starting line I got out of shape, and kind of wallered around. The truck was moving all over the track. When Bob didn't pull away from me like I thought he would, then I thought I was going to be okay. When I saw the time slip, I said 'hot damn!' I really think if I would have gone straight, we could have run a .58 or a .59.
"Now we have two good runs on our tune-up. That is right where we want to be. All we need to do now is some fine-tuning. Tomorrow evening I think if the weather holds we will run a .58. Who knows maybe we could even catch Randy (Daniels)? When that happens, you can bet, I'll be at the top end doing the Lumpy-dance."
For those who don't know what the 'Lumpy-dance' is, it's a dance of joy that can only come from Brian "Lump" Self.
Will there be dancing on the top end? Stay tuned and find out when qualifying continues on Friday June 23. Eliminations at the Fourth Annual Sears Craftsman Nationals take place on Saturday June 24.
