Madison, Ill. (Pre-race) - Brian Self has never been the kind of person to do things like everyone else does. Self likes to be different, even his nickname is unusual "Lump". Last weekend in Columbus, Lump went out of his way to do things different from the rest of the competitors in the Pro Stock Truck class. Lump hopes that this strategy pays off for him and his Roof-Tec Racing Chevy S-10 team when they get to the next stop on the NHRA Drag Racing Series; the third Annual Sears Craftsman Nationals in Madison, Ill.
"I think that from now am going to be unpredictable," said Lump. "I don't think it hurts any to have the guy in the other lane guessing. Everybody is used to me staging last, but going in first was kind of fun. It threw everybody off. This last weekend we did everything different. I staged different, we qualified different, and we ended up having a pretty good weekend."
"In Columbus we made a lot of changes. We tried a different gear ratio every round. Most people won't test like that at the racetrack, but we did and it paid off for us. I learned a lot, and it helped us to just get better. We ended up qualifying in the top half. I would like to qualify in the top half again this weekend in St. Louis. I think we can do that.
"The conditions in St. Louis will be a lot like what we had in Columbus; hot and humid. If we can learn as much this weekend as we did last weekend, I think that we are going to be hard to beat. Just go ahead and put Randy in the lane next to me, because this time I'm going across the finish-line first."
Qualifying at the Third Annual Sears Craftsman Nationals in Madison, Ill. begins on Thursday June 22, and continues on Friday June 23. Eliminations will take place on Saturday June 24.
