Johnson'S performance improves in Rugged Liners event.

BRAINERD, Minn., August 17, 2002 -- The fortunes of the Skoal Racing Blue and Green Funny Car crews flip-flopped Saturday as qualifying for Sunday's Rugged Liners Nationals was completed at Brainerd International Raceway.

Tommy Johnson Jr.'s Blue Skoal Racing Camaro posted runs of 4.927 and 4.910 seconds, the latter at 305.15 mph, to take the No. 5 starting position. He races Bob Bode, who was 12th, 5.029 at 302.62 mph.

"We tuned it up and the car ran better," said Johnson, who is looking for his first NHRA POWERade Series victory of the year. "We'll be ready to go Sunday."

On the other side of Don "The Snake" Prudhomme's Funny Car camp, Ron Capps failed to qualify. His best run, 5.096 at 280.49 mph, left him 17th overall. He was runner-up at the last event two weeks ago at Sonoma, Calif.

"When the clutch locked up, the tires lost traction and began spinning on both runs," Capps explained. "The car made it farther down the track before the clutch locked up than it did in the first run. It's very disappointing."
