BRAINERD, Minn. (Aug. 13, 2004) - Tommy Johnson Jr. and crew chief Mike Green posted some very promising numbers with their Don Prudhomme-owned blue Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo Friday at Brainerd International Raceway.

Johnson powered to the No. 3 qualifying spot after Friday's first qualifying session when he drove his blue Chevy flopper to a performance of 5.026 seconds at 308.00 mph. Even though Johnson's Monte Carlo spun the tires on Friday's second effort, the car recorded the best 330-foot time of the session, which is encouraging for the blue Skoal Racing crew as they hope to improve their position on Saturday.

"That was the best pass that we've made to the 330-foot mark since the rule change to the 85-percent nitromethane," Johnson said. "We've struggled making power since the rule change. It sure looks like Mike (Green) and the guys figured it out. The early numbers on that second pass were very encouraging. We ran the best 330 (time) of the session. Now, all we have to do is tame the tune-up a bit and we'll be back in the hunt."

The five-time NHRA winner will look to move into the top half of the Funny Car ladder when rounds three and four of nitro qualifying begin at noon and 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14.
