The NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series will invade the Brainerd International Raceway August 16-19th. The loyal NHRA fans of the area have supported this event for 20 years and there is always a heighten energy level surrounding this event.
The NHRA Colonel's Truck Accessories Nationals is the 17th race on the 24 race schedule. Reigning Pro Stock Champion Jeg Coughlin Jr enters the event ready to strike from the No. 3 position in the points. Jeg has 940 points. He trails Jim Yates by 91 points and is 164 points away from reclaiming the top spot. Troy is currently in the No. 20 position with 354 points. He is 294 points away from breaking back into the top ten.
Jeg and Troy Coughlin know how important that the remaining eight races are. Team Jeg's is focused on the big picture and the team is ready to return to the winner's circle.
"We have not done as good a job as we did last year on capitalizing on others' mistakes. We have missed opportunities to really catapult up in the points when the group of drivers around us are eliminated in early rounds," explained Jeg. "There is plenty of racing left and the importance of remaining races grows with each round."
"Our group comes to each race with a game plan. We know the possible setups that we will put into the Jeg's Chevy Cavaliers and we have everything in our trailer that we need," said Troy. "Our number one problem has been not dotting the i's and crossing the T's. We have identified the problem and that is the first step in solving it. Team Jeg's is committed to winning and we are excited about the opportunities of the next eight races."
The eight races remaining are important. With a third of the races still remaining a lot can change in the points. Fans can expect to see a series of late season charges mounted by top teams as they pull out all of the stops to win the 2001 NHRA Winston Championship.
