Brainerd, MN (August 18): After struggling on the West coast swing, Team Exide and driver Tony Schumacher came to Brainerd International Raceway to prove that they are not out of the hunt to defend their 1999 Top Fuel championship.

In the first session of the day and after many teams experienced tire smoking problems, Schumacher went down the track with a 4.670 e.t. at 302.28 mph to capture the No. 1 qualifying position.

"We needed a good run to start the weekend," said Schumacher, "we have a really good baseline for the run tonight."

In the cool evening air of Northern Minnesota, Team Exide wanted to put a number on the board for other teams to shoot for. "We are going to roll the dice and see what this track will take," said Schumacher before being strapped into his 300-mph dragster.

Schumacher was able to end day one as the No. 1 qualifier as his Dan Olson tune-up propelled him to an impressive 4.587 e.t. at 319.14 mph. The next closet qualifier was Doug Herbert's 4.661 second pass.

"The car was really hauling," said Schumacher, "Dan and the guys really worked hard to put a strong run together."

"We typically don't run that well at night," said Schumacher, "but we'll take that one and look to work on our race day setup."

Schumacher will have two more runs down the track as qualifying continues Saturday at noon and 4:00pm as Schumacher tries to capture his first No. 1 qualifying position of his career.
