BRAINERD, Minn. - Cory McClenathan, Cruz Pedregon, Jim Yates and John Smith are the leaders in their respective professional categories entering Sunday's final eliminations at the 17th annual VisionAire NorthStar Nationals.

The $1.5 million race is the 15th of 22 events in the $30-million NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series.

Persistent showers throughout the day forced NHRA officials to cancel the first qualifying session, leaving teams only one chance to improve their positions for Sunday's eliminations at Brainerd International Raceway, which begin at 11 a.m.

No one bettered McClenathan's 4.598 second, 311.63 mph run from Friday. McClenathan, of Anaheim, Calif., is the event's defending winner in Top Fuel.

Pedregon, of Camarillo, Calif., earned the No. 1 position in Funny Car with a spectacular 4.937 at a track record speed of 312.39 in a Pontiac Firebird. It was Pedregon's eighth No. 1 qualifying effort of the season.

Alexandria, Va.'s Yates continued to pace the Pro Stock order. His run of 7.023 at 195.39 in a Pontiac Firebird stood as the best effort of the weekend. Yates earned his first Pro Stock victory at BIR in 1994.

Local favorite John Smith, of Minneapolis, remained atop the Pro Stock Motorcycle order with his Friday run of 7.469 at 185.07, also a track record speed.
