LUCAS DEFEATED IN FIRST ROUND

BRAINERD, MN (Aug. 14) -- It was not quite the day at Brainerd International Raceway that Morgan Lucas, driver of the Joe Amato-owned Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster was expecting. With his hopes high going into the race, he received a setback against his opponent, Doug Herbert, losing in the opening round of competition at the 24 annual Lucas Oil Nationals.

Although he ran a great time of 4.595 seconds along with a speed of 326.24 mph, Lucas earned the starting line advantage by a good margin (.059 - .093), but the tempo quickly changed as Herbert ran a time of 4.546 seconds, 325.06 mph.

"We lost a good side-by-side drag race," said Lucas. "Our Lucas Oil dragster was running pretty strong this weekend, not a single problem in the world with it. I wanted to be on the safe side and grabbed the brake a couple of times, probably too many. It was trying to rattle the tire a little bit and I think that slowed the car down just a little too much. I had him on the starting line, but that's all right. We'll just go on to the next race and we'll be fine."

In the POWERade Top Fuel point standings, Lucas has slipped to sixth position and now has amassed a total of 980 points. He now trails leader Doug Kalitta by 268 with seven races remaining.

The next NHRA National event will be the O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals at the Memphis Motorsports Park in Millington, Tenn. on August 19 -- 21.
