White hoping to keep win streak alive

BRAINERD, Minn. - NHRA Federal Mogul Funny Car driver Marc White has a lot behind him coming into this weekend's Colonel's Truck Accessory Nationals in Brainerd, Minn. The former Division 3 Champ comes into the event not only on the heels of three straight wins, but on the speedy recovery of team owner George Etterman.

Two weeks ago, at a Division 3 race at Edgewater Motorsports Park, in Cleves, Ohio, the team's owner, Etterman, suffered a mild heart attack during Friday qualifying, and was taken to the hospital. In those circumstances, it could have been easy for the team to stay at the hospital with their patriarch and team leader, and quite acceptable. However, just as any leader or head coach, Etterman would have none of it, and sent his "troops" back into battle at the racetrack while he remained at the hospital, where he underwent angioplasty surgery, and was later released on Monday.

With that as their 'rally cry' so to speak, White and team took the win from the No. 1 qualifying spot for their team owner. This weekend, the team will return to normal with Etterman at the helm of their program.

"George [Etterman] will be back with us in Brainerd," said White, from Glendale Heights, Ill. "We don't know how much he will be able to do, but as long as he's there, smiling and happy, we'll be ok."

"Basically, we're going to try to do like we do at every race: to run as fast as the racetrack will allow us to run," continued White. "Looking at the weather, it looks like it's going to be in the mid to high 70's up there.

The racetrack is pretty good, so I think we should be able to run pretty fast up there. I'm really looking forward to getting up there."

With all things considered, White expects to post some good numbers this weekend.

"It is a little bit of an altitude track," stated White. "It's about 1200 ft. [above sea level]. I would think that we can run some mid 5.70's, maybe low 5.70's are possible. I haven't been up there since the overdrive restrictions, so I'm not sure how the altitude is going to affect it. I think if you can run in the mid .70's, you ought to be a player."

Even with his string of victories, and current seventh place national standing, White does not consider himself in the running for the National Championship.

"We don't even think about that," White commented. "We won the last divisional race, picked up 85 points, and we didn't even move up one position nationally, we're still in seventh. There's some guys in front of us that got quite a jump on us; we gave away a lot of points earlier in the year.

We're just going to race as hard as we can, and we end up where we end up."

"Next year, maybe we'll set our schedule up and try to do some things differently," added White.

Qualifying begins on Friday with sessions at 1:30 and 4:45 p.m. for the Federal Mogul Funny Cars. Stay tuned to InsideFMRacing.com for the latest Federal Mogul racing news.
